Young's Creek Mine
welcome to:

Consol Energy and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company
are developing the Young’s Creek mine north of Sheridan Wyoming.
The proposed mine has reserves of high BTU, low sulfur coal
reaching over 300 million tons. Once the mine is in operation the
company plans on extracting 15 million tons of coal per year. This is
exciting news for the Sheridan area.
Young’s Creek mine will directly employee up to 300 workers and will
indirectly benefit hundreds more. Engineers and environmental
specialists are in the planning stages right now and expect to have
the permits ready by late 2008. The mine will start operating once the
coal has been pre-sold to power plants around the country.
Coal production is a big deal in Wyoming. Over 6,000 Wyoming
residents are directly employed by coal mines, and thousands more
indirectly make their living from the coal mines. Wyoming ships
nearly 400 million tons of coal out per year to 35 different states. The
coal is used for power plants.
The seam at Young’s Creek mine contains some of the highest grade
coal found in the Powder River Basin. Wyoming coal is sub-
bituminous (low ash) coal with a low sulfur content – meaning that it
burns cleaner. Wyoming produces nearly 40 percent of the nation’s
coal used in power plants.
